Abstract

In principle, a news report must be objective and unbiased. But in practice there is often a news that is
not objective and biased. This is because there are interests that affect the pattern of media content so
that the news tends to be biased. One form of bias is framing, which is the process of selecting and
emphasizing certain issues from the many issues that exist. With regard to framing practices, this
article focuses on two issues, namely first, how to frame the news of clashes between members of the
Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) with police officers in Kompas.com and Tirto.id? Second, what factors
influenced the framing of the news of the clashes between members of the Islamic Defenders Front
(FPI) and police officers in Kompas.com and Tirto.id? The method used is the framing analysis of
Robert N. Entman's model. Data collection uses documentation and literature review, while data
analysis is text analysis that refers to Entman framing analysis. The results of the study showed that
first, framing Kompas.com highlighted the fact of attacks carried out by FPI members against police
officers. While framing Tirto.id highlights the fact of shootings carried out by police officers against
FPI members. Second, the factor that affects framing is the media practices (media routines) of the
both of online media. Thus, the both of online media in their reporting on clashes between FPI
members and police officers tend to be biased because they are influenced by their respective media
practices.
