Abstract

The phenomenon of “pick me girl” behavior among adolescent girls has become increasingly visible in school settings and social interactions, potentially affecting peer relationships and students’ social adjustment. This study aimed to explore the characteristics, underlying factors, and impacts of pick me girl behavior among female students at the senior high school level. The research employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documentation involving guidance and counseling teachers as well as students selected through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of data analysis, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data credibility was ensured through source triangulation. The findings indicate that pick me girl behavior is reflected in various forms of attention-seeking toward male peers, self-comparison with other female students, and the desire to gain recognition and validation. The behavior is influenced by internal factors, such as low self-esteem and the need for social acceptance, as well as external factors, including peer interactions, social environment, and exposure to social media. Furthermore, this behavior may lead to interpersonal conflicts, negative peer perceptions, and difficulties in establishing healthy social relationships. The findings highlight the importance of preventive and developmental guidance and counseling services to strengthen students’ self- confidence, self-acceptance, and positive social interactions in the school environment.
