Abstract

In the increasingly evolving digital era, instant messaging applications such as WhatsApp have become essential tools for social interaction. The group feature enables members to communicate and share information collectively. The aim of this research is to analyze how silent readers interpret interactions within WhatsApp groups among high school students who are members of the Islamic Spiritual Group (ROHIS), with a focus on interaction dynamics, motivations, and related implications. The Symbolic Interaction Theory is utilized as an approach to comprehend how symbolic meanings, self-perceptions, and nonverbal communication contribute to the behavior of silent readers. A qualitative research method, specifically in-depth interviews, is employed to collect data from six informants who are ROHIS members in high school. Research findings reveal that silent readers exhibit diverse motives and reasons, including a desire to monitor information, feeling more comfortable in a passive role, and avoiding conflicts. Despite their lack of verbal engagement, silent readers play a significant role in group dynamics by acting as observers who help maintain stability and balance. The outcomes of this research offer a deeper understanding of the phenomenon of silent readers within WhatsApp groups, along with its implications in the realm of social communication in the digital age.
