"This study presents a Defected Ground Structure\r\n(DGS) mechanism and improves its antenna properties.\r\nThree DGS models are discussed: two including a single\r\nantenna and one including an array microstrip antenna\r\ndesign. The microstrips are designed for broadband wireless\r\nfrequencies of 2.1 GHz (5G Technology) for a single antenna,\r\nand 5.8 GHz (wireless local area network) for an array\r\nantenna. These frequencies are achieved using three shapes\r\nof DGS in the simulations and the results are suitable for\r\nbroadband applications. The antenna patches are\r\nrectangular with two types of DGS, and an array circular\r\nwith one type of DGS. The results show the DGS provides\r\nbetter bandwidth and gain for a single antenna. Nevertheless,\r\nDGS achieves gain enhancement for an array antenna and\r\nthis design yields a miniaturized array antenna of 69.92%\r\nand 73.47% in width and length, respectively. The three\r\nshapes of DGS have different designs: rectangular patch\r\nantenna with frame-shaped DGS, rectangular antenna with\r\nrectangular slot-shaped DGS, and array circular antenna\r\nwith rectangular slots of DGS. A rectangular patch antenna\r\nwith frame-shaped DGS and an array circular antenna with\r\nrectangular slots of DGS yields bandwidths of 533 MHz and\r\n327 MHz. The single antenna improves the fractional\r\nbandwidth by 25.38% with a miniaturized patch.
