"The existence of gay community in Indonesia where people tend to be religious, is difficult to \r\ngain acceptance from various parties. The prevailing culture is eastern culture where people \r\nuphold strongly religious values, norms, morals, and customs. Community rejection of the \r\nexistence of gay community makes gay very careful in expressing their sexual orientation \r\npublicly. It is of interest therefore to study gay community, especially gay coming out as this \r\ncommunity has unique characteristic underlying their communication patterns and lifestyles, \r\ndifferent significantly with the heterosexual community groups. Symbols of communication \r\nthey use in interacting with other people feature its distinct characteristics of the gay \r\ncommunity.The purpose of this study is to find out the activities, communication patterns, and \r\nthe formation of self-identity after coming out. Theories that are relevant in this study are: (i) \r\nSymbolic Interactionism theory, (ii) Identity theory, and (iii) Self-Presentation theory. The \r\nresearch paradigm used is subjective while the Ethnography of Communication methods \r\nadopted in analyzing this phenomenon are conducting in-depth interviews, observation, focus \r\ngroup discussions, and document analysis. Data Analysis is performed using Miles & \r\nHuberman Interactive Model\r\nThe results show the communication activities are carried out in every situation, \r\nevents, and acts of communication. Unconsciously, members of the community use \r\ncommunication patterns that at the end of the day becomes a habit. Against the backdrop of \r\ntheir day to day communication activities they would create communiation patterns along \r\nwith communication competency reflecting various stages of relationships. It starts from just \r\nsimple friendship all the way to a more intimate ones. Event of communication can be divided \r\ninto three events, namely, with fellow members, with other institution and with society. \r\nOpenness in the families, communities, and society by coming out is preceded by the process \r\nof coming in, a revelation of himself as a gay followed by self-identification and self-concept. \r\nGay specific communication styles serve as a way out for gay communtiy to overcome \r\ngayphobia such as negative stigma, bullying, and discrimination in the society. Gayphobia, \r\nthe fear of society against gay community, is inversely proportional to hetero phobia in the \r\nform of bullying committed by gay community against ex-gay and gay undergoing process to convert to the hetero. Sexual rituals among the gay community are held to bind emotions with \r\nhis partner through variety sexual roles. The perspective of some members of the community \r\nchanged, as they start to believe that 'gay can change'. The previously held myth that gaygene is considered innate finally dies. This affects the identity formation of two informants \r\nwho actually want to convert into hetero-sexual"^^ . . .
