Terdapat empat kultivar dari S. samarangense yaitu kultivar putih, kultivar hijau, kultivar merah muda dan kultivar merah. Penelitian ini digunakan dengan melihat pentingnya mengkaji tanaman S. samarangense secara luas berdasarkan metode literasi jurnal dan eksplorasi jurnal yang terkait dengan kandungan kimia dan aktivitas farmakologi tanaman S. samarangense. Dari hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa S. samarangense mengandung alkaloid, tanin, saponin, terpenoid, steroid dan fenolik. Tanaman S. samarangense mempunyai potensi sebagai analgesik, antiinflamasi, apoptosis, anti kanker, dan memiliki aktivitas antioksidan yang tinggi. Tanaman S. samarangense berpotensi untuk dikembangkan menjadi pangan fungsional atau suplemen makanan untuk mencegah diabetes melitus.
