Abstract

This essay figures out the relationship between paradigms of poverty and community empowerment, examines some notions and practices of empowerment in Indonesia, and looks at how a sort of Islamic liberative theology might inspire future practices and movements in the country. In doing so, the author highlights the important role that the state has to play in employing pro-empowerment policies, the centrality of the community itself in due empowerment, and some examples of religion being a driving force behind empowerment activities.
